In January, the Center for Ethical Leadership in Media (CELM) conducted a workshop with seven University of Texas at Austin student media leaders. The session provided opportunities to assess their own values and strengths and to develop concept maps for good leadership. In keeping with CELM’s approach, participants were encouraged to consider their own leadership style and how to balance the needs of an organization with those of other students working in media.
Participants discussed challenges around having difficult conversations with fellow students and other aspects of leadership within their respective organizations, which included The Daily Texan, The Cactus Yearbook, the Texas Travesty, The Drag Audio, KVRX-FM and Texas Student Television.
Most participants who responded to our post-workshop survey rated the event “very useful.” One participant said, “The entire workshop was extremely helpful and I think more people in TSM leadership positions should take it.”
