Kathleen McElroy

Dr. Kathleen McElroy is a professor, the Frank A. Bennack Jr. Chair in Journalism and director of the Center for Ethical Leadership in Media at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research interests include newsroom practices, obituaries, race and media, and sports. While earning her doctorate, she was a Harrington Graduate Fellow and received awards for teaching and research. She previously was an assistant professor at Oklahoma State University, where she taught news reporting and sports media. Before receiving her doctorate from UT-Austin, she spent 20 years at The New York Times, serving as associate managing editor, dining editor, deputy sports editor and deputy web editor. She also worked for The National, Newsday (on Long Island), the Austin American-Statesman, The Huntsville Item and The Bryan-College Station Eagle. She received a master’s from New York University and a bachelor’s from Texas A&M University.
