Nine Texas Student Media leaders, representing BEVO Video, KVRX, Texas Student Television, the Texas Travesty, the Daily Texan, Burnt X Orange, The Drag Audio, and the Cactus Yearbook, convened for a leadership workshop in September. Center for Ethical Leadership (or CELM) Director Kathleen McElroy conducted the workshop.
Participants assessed strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities (known as SWOT) for themselves and individuals and for their respective organizations. They also identified traits and practices of good leaders.
Attendees said they valued the opportunity to share with, hear from and connect to other leaders. In a follow-up survey, one student leader wrote, “I liked being able to see what other orgs were experiencing and relating them to my own!”
They also expressed a desire for more specific and hands-on training, when asked for suggestions to improve. For instance, another student leader wrote, “I would like to learn about tools or tips on how to lead. Whether it be communicating in email and slack, how to handle various issues, what to do when you feel uncertain about decisions, how to communicate with other leaders in the organization, etc.”
